The Charis (Greek: kar-is, grace) Spiritual Director Training Program provides experiential and contemplative formation, study and sacred space that will equip lay and clergy to serve as trained spiritual directors.
The program began in 2005 and is now a part of The Gathered Community of Spiritual Directors 501c3.
Each year of the three-year program includes two three-day retreats and eight second Saturday training days, coinciding with a ten month (August-May) academic year. The Saturday classes during September through April will include worship, presentations, discussions, experiential prayer, small group listening circles and fellowship.
The day begins at 9:00 and concludes at 4:00.
In August and May, Thursday through Saturday retreats are led by Council/Faculty
and may occasionally have a special presenter.
Charis Vision
The Charis Spiritual Director Training Program embraces the rich heritage of Christian spirituality. The experiential and community-based program offers personal transformation along with academic study, equipping students to serve as Spirit-guided companions for others.
Spiritual Philosophy and Guiding Principals
Charis is distinctively Christian on perspective while practicing hospitality to self and others. The program is undergirded by the understanding of the philosophy of grace and the practice of accountability in the everyday spirituality of life. The ethical guidelines of Spiritual Directors International are followed as spiritual companionship is offered into the world.
The Path of Becoming a Spiritual Director
The three-year Charis program includes 450 class hours and six retreats that are contemplative and experiential in nature. There is a focus on personal spiritual growth and formational process as each Charis participant continues to discern God’s call to this Spirit-led ministry.
